The Digital Marketing Timeline

From a one-line test email to AI-written ad copy and how marketing got built, decade by decade, like steel: mined raw, rolled flat, heated in the forge, and finally tempered into something that holds an edge. Here's the build history, plus the trivia that didn't make the spec sheet.

1971-1979 // RAW ORE

Origins: Before "Marketing" Was Digital

No banners, no clicks, no websites - just a network built for the military and academia, and the first people who realized you could sell something on it.

1971

The First Network Email

Ray Tomlinson, a DARPA researcher, sends the first message between two computers over ARPANET, the internet's ancestor. It was a test message to himself, not an ad, but it created the channel every email marketer now depends on. And we've come a long since then. Oh, have we.

â—† Trivia

Tomlinson never saved the message and, decades later, said he couldn't remember what it said only guessing it was something like "QWERTYUIOP," since it was just a connectivity test.

1978

The First Spam Email

Gary Thuerk, a marketer at Digital Equipment Corporation, emails 400 ARPANET users to pitch a new computer line. It's the first mass unsolicited commercial email and the ARPANET administrators were furious.

â—† Trivia

Thuerk's message annoyed regulators enough to draw an official reprimand, but it reportedly drove around $13 million in sales for DEC as proof, even then, that unwanted email could still convert.

1986-1998 // ROLLED STEEL

The Web Goes Public

Databases, dial-up, and the invention of the medium itself. This is the decade the phrase "digital marketing" actually gets coined.

1986

ListServ, the First Email Marketing Software

Companies had been building customer databases for direct mail since the late '70s, but ListServ was the first tool built specifically to manage and send email at scale to the ancestor of every ESP marketers use today.

1990

The World Wide Web Is Invented

Tim Berners-Lee builds the Web at CERN, and the term "digital marketing" is coined shortly after as the commercial ban on internet use is lifted, which opened the network to business for the first time.

1994

The First Clickable Banner Ad

HotWired sells AT&T the first clickable banner ad, running October 27, 1994, alongside spots for Volvo, Zima, and IBM. Yahoo also launches this year, becoming one of the web's first major directories.

â—† Trivia

That AT&T banner pulled a reported 44% click-through rate - a number so far beyond today's typical fraction-of-a-percent that most modern marketers would assume it's a typo. Wired also charged AT&T the same flat rate it charged for a full-page print ad: $10,000 a month.

1996

Hotmail Launches Free Webmail

Hotmail gives anyone a free, browser-based email address that doesn't depend on their internet provider and instantly expanding the pool of inboxes marketers could reach, for better and worse.

â—† Trivia

Hotmail's founders deliberately launched it on July 4th Independence Day in the U.S. This was for freeing email from being "owned" by your internet service provider.

1998

Google Is Founded

Larry Page and Sergey Brin launch Google, built on a relevance-ranking approach that would eventually make "getting found" the SEO discipline of its own.

â—† Trivia

Google's original name, coined two years earlier as a research project, was BackRub. It was named for its method of analyzing the "back links" pointing to a webpage.

2000-2007 // INTO THE FORGE

Search Gets Paid, Social Gets Born

The dot-com bubble clears out the noise, and what's left standing builds the platforms that still run marketing budgets today.

2000

Google AdWords Launches (Sponsored Promotions)

Google introduces AdWords with just 350 advertisers, initially priced as a flat monthly subscription rather than the auction-based, pay-per-click model it would evolve into by 2002.

2002-2003

LinkedIn and MySpace Arrive

LinkedIn is founded in a living room in late 2002 and launches in 2003, opening the door to B2B social marketing. MySpace launches the same year and becomes the dominant social network through the mid-2000s.

2004

Facebook and Gmail Launch

A Harvard-only site called TheFacebook goes live, and Gmail launches the same year with an unheard-of gigabyte of free storage thereby pressuring every other webmail provider to expand their limits overnight.

2005-2006

YouTube and Twitter Launch

YouTube arrives in 2005 and is acquired by Google within a year. Twitter launches in 2006, giving brands a real-time channel for the first time. Facebook opens itself up beyond college campuses.

2007

The iPhone Changes the Target

Apple's iPhone launches, and Facebook Ads goes live the same year. Marketing now has to work for a screen in someone's pocket, not just the one on their desk.

2010-2019 // FULL BLAZE

Mobile, Video, and the Feed

Marketing stops being something you place and starts being something you produce, constantly, for platforms that reward volume.

2010

Instagram and Pinterest Launch

Visual-first platforms arrive, pulling marketing budgets toward photography, product styling, and eventually the influencer economy.

2015

Mobile Overtakes Desktop

Mobile search traffic passes desktop for the first time, forcing brands to redesign sites, ads, and checkout flows around a small screen and a thumb.

2017-2018

Short-Form Video and Data Privacy Arrive Together

TikTok expands internationally, kicking off the short-form video race that YouTube and Instagram would soon copy. In May 2018, the EU's GDPR takes effect, making data privacy a compliance issue marketers can no longer treat as optional.

2020-2026 // TEMPERED

Privacy Locks Down, AI Opens Up

The cookie crumbles, first-party data becomes currency, and generative AI starts writing the ads that used to take a whole team.

2021

Apple's App Tracking Transparency Ships

iOS 14.5 requires apps to ask permission before tracking users across other apps, breaking the ad-targeting playbook Facebook and countless smaller platforms had run on for a decade.

2022

ChatGPT Launches

OpenAI's ChatGPT arrives in November 2022 and becomes the fastest-growing consumer app in history up to that point, pulling generative AI into everyday marketing workflows: copywriting, ideation, and eventually image and video generation. It happened almost overnight.

2023-2026

AI Search and AI-Made Creative Go Mainstream

Search engines roll out AI-generated summary answers that push traditional blue links further down the page, and marketing teams increasingly use AI tools for first-draft copy, ad variants, and campaign analysis while still leaning on human judgment for anything that has to actually sound like the brand.
